Team Aloe Up’s Terwilliger  sprints to 1st place Finish in Grand Old Days 2006 8K.

Jeff Terwilliger of Team Aloe Up powered his way in the final meters of the Grand Old Days 8K to edge out Tone Coughlin of Team Sk8HARD.net in an explosive sprint to finish.

The weather was nearly perfect with temperatures in the 70s and little wind as the Grand Old Days  course record was established  on Saturday morning.

Local teams included Team Aloe Up, TC Speed, Flanders, Media Machine and SK8HARD from Duluth.

As usual the pace was fast right from the gun.  Numerous skaters tried to break from the pack on fast downhill but were constantly caught by the main pack that at times numbered an estimated 30 skaters.

Team Aloe’s Jay Jackson attempted a break away on the way out only to be caught before the turnaround by Flander’s Mike Anderson.

After the turnaround the intensity quickly picked up as the climb back up the hill ensued.  TC Speed’s Ricardo Amaya, Team SK8HARD’s Kurt Halverson and Anderson kept the pace high after the turnaround. Aloe Up’s Terwilliger and Coughlin covered every break and pulled the pack back up the hill.

The slight downhill finish made for fast sprint to the line with Terwilliger edging out Coughlin for the win.

The women’s race again was dominated by TC Speed’s Kara Peterson who out paced 2nd place finisher Martha Flynn by over one minute.
